Dr. Barend J.(Hannes) van der Westhuizen, a General Orthopedic Surgeon, with over >20 Years of Clinical Experience.

He specializes in Sports Medicine, Shoulder, Hip and Knee Surgery, as well as Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatment of Fractures, Dislocations, Sprains and General Orthopaedics.  He commonly performs Hip and Knee Replacements, including Minimally Invasive Partial Knee Replacements.                          

Dr. Van der Westhuizen has a particular expertise in treating Shoulder and Knee Conditions.  The most common shoulder conditions include Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery for Rotator Cuff Tears, Labral/SLAP Tears, Biceps Tendon Tears, Shoulder Dislocations and Instability.  He performs approximately 20 Shoulder Replacements Annually.  Arthroscopic Knee Surgery for Knee conditions include Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tears, Collateral Ligament Tears, Meniscal Tears, Cartilage Lesions and Tendon Ruptures.   

He completed his Undergraduate and Medical Studies at the University of Stellenbosch. His interest and experience in Orthopaedics started 25 years ago when he joined the Department of Surgery and Orthopaedics at Conradie Hospital in Cape Town.  Dr. Van der Westhuizen graduated in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of the Free State in 2002.  During his residency, Dr. Van der Westhuizen received Extensive Orthopaedic Training, particularly in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, as both Pelonomi Hospital and Universitas Hospital were level one trauma centres.

He is an active member of the Health Professionals Council of South Africa as well as the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). He annually attends the Nice Shoulder Course and bi-annually attends the Annecy Live Surgery International Shoulder Advanced Course to further educate himself and stay in touch with the latest trends in this rapidly evolving field.   

The goal of his practice is to Provide his Patients with the Best Physician | Patient Experience they can possibly have as they are recovering from their injuries. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, cycling and fishing.
